Where are your pets in this cold weather?
A family dog is safe thanks to the efforts of the Sherrill-Kenwood Fire Department. According to the department, they were responding to the scene on Kenwood Road on Sunday when they were told that a dog was trapped in Oneida Creek, and unable to reach shore. Firefighters found “Colby” surrounded by frigid water on a small island about 200 yards from a dam in the creek. They say the normally calm water was moving fast, and ice was breaking away from areas along the creek bank. Firefighters made their way toward the “visibly agitated” dog by negotiating chest-high, chilling water. Other crews also responded to the scene and, with some help, firefighters were able to fit a collar, a leash, and a harness to the troubled dog. After bringing the dog back to shore, he was returned to his home, where he was dried and warmed. No one was injured during the rescue. Fire officials say the dog was “quickly back to normal” after returning home.
